Six students were recently recognized after completing the rigorous Veterinary Technology program at Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC). The graduates were Meagan Smith of Moultrie, Kristen Morris of Madison, FL, Anya Richt of Athens, Rachel Glover of Pavo, Madeline Chance of Albany, and SRTC’s 2020 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) award winner Harrison Avera of Thomasville.

In addition to classroom lecture and hands-on lab training on campus, “Vet Tech” students each spend numerous hours in clinical rotations at Animal Hospitals. Anya Richt interned at University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Harrison Avera and Meagan Smith interned at Thomasville Animal Hospital, Rachel Glover interned at Azalea City Animal Hospital, Madeline Chance interned at Quailwood Animal Hospital, and Kristen Morris interned at Baytree Animal Hospital.

“We are grateful for our partnerships with these excellent animal hospitals,” said Program Chair Dr. Jennifer Mason. “Our students are able to immediately apply their classroom knowledge and training in a real-world setting. We are humbled and proud that many of these hospitals choose to hire our students immediately after graduation.”

SRTC’s Vet Tech program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities. Students train on the same state of the art medical equipment found in modern veterinary offices and hospitals, including comprehensive blood analysis laboratory equipment, computed radiography, endoscopy, ultrasound, digital dental radiography, ophthalmic tonometer, and a Surgivet multi-parameter surgical monitor. Program graduates receive the Associate of Applied Science degree, are eligible to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Examination, and are qualified to apply for credentials as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of Georgia.
