“As a teenager, I worked at a fabric shop in my hometown in Southern California, bought my first sewing machine while working there in high school, and made new outfits for nearly every day of the week for school,” said Sewing Instructor, Theresa Sterling. “In fact, that sewing machine I purchased in the early 1980s is the same indestructible Swedish Viking Husqvarna machine I use today and will use for demonstration in the class.”
This September, the Economic Development Division of Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) Bainbridge is proud to welcome Theresa Sterling for a two-day sewing course at the SRTC – Midtown location: 315 South Boulevard Drive, Bainbridge, GA 39819. Basic Sewing I will be offered on the mornings of September 14 and 21, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm each day. The course will cost $50 for both days.
The course will introduce participants to basic sewing terms, skills, fabric types and essential tools. Participants will practice basic stitching and mending before constructing a fabric tote bag. Time permitting, there will be a guided Mending Lab for participants to learn how to hem garments, affix buttons, repair seams, mend holes and affix badges or patches.
Sewing, even at its most basic level, is an important life skill for youth and adults, men and women alike. In fact, Sterling said that she discovered her love for the craft at as a child. “My mom has always sewed beautifully, and she used to make our clothes. I started sewing at a very young age, maybe around 10. I used to make little purses and such things,” she recalled.
Participants should bring fabric pins, fabric shears, thread trimmers, clean garments needing repair and a working non-commercial sewing machine with machine needles for woven cotton fabric and at least one bobbin. Participants should be familiar with their sewing machines as this is not a sewing machine workshop; however, bringing the machine manual is suggested.
