SRTC Holds Winter Commencement Ceremony

On January 26th, 2017 Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) held its winter commencement ceremony at the Thomasville High School gymnasium. Graduation is a day of celebrating and conferring degrees, diplomas, and certificates to students who have completed their respective credit and GED programs of study. This ceremony served to recognize 704 individual graduates earning a total of 1,035 awards. Many graduates received multiple honors as certain programs have embedded certificates that are obtained when completing said program in its entirety.

SRTC chose special guest Dr. Gregory Patterson to deliver the commencement address. Dr. Patterson received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Mercer University in Atlanta. He attended the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine in Augusta and completed his internship in general surgery at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinic. His residency was also at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinic where he was also Chief Resident in General Surgery. He is board-certified in general surgery and wound care, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Wound Management.

Dr. Patterson is a member of the American Academy of Wound Management, American College of Surgeons, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association and the Association of Surgical Technologists. Dr. Patterson has a great appreciation for what is takes to become a true asset to the operating room environment, and continue on a path of progress, as he obtained his degree in Surgical Technology from Dekalb Technical College before he became a general surgeon.

Patterson spoke on the importance of technical education and the role it has played in his life, particularly how it provided a foundation for his medical education and enabled him to achieve the career success he has enjoyed to date. He encouraged students to continually strive for their goals and addressed the adversity young graduates may face, but implored them to always act ethically and professionally.

“This commencement ceremony was a continued celebration of our new, larger college. This event is the first of two that we will host this year. Being able to recognize all of these individuals for their academic achievement further reiterates the importance of technical education in our area, as we have representation from all seven counties - Colquitt, Grady, Mitchell, Thomas, Tift, Turner, and Worth – in our new service delivery area, plus many additional surrounding counties and other parts of the state,” commented Dr. Craig Wentworth, President of Southern Regional Technical College.

SRTC offers over 148 degree, diploma, and certificate programs that are designed to get you quickly into your desired career, and 27 general education courses that transfer to the University System of Georgia institutions and 19 private colleges and universities in Georgia. SRTC has instructional sites located in Ashburn, Cairo, Camilla, Moultrie, Thomasville, Tifton, and Sylvester for the convenience of our students. The College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
