The Central Sterile Technician Technical Certificate of Credit provides students with entry-level training in nationally based competencies that will prepare graduates to function in the sterile supply processing and distribution area of health care facilities. Students will develop skills necessary to properly decontaminate, process, prepare, store, and issue both sterile and non-sterile medical and surgical supplies and equipment in the healthcare setting. Students will be prepared to operate and monitor sterilizers in healthcare facilities.

Length of Program: Two (2) Semesters

Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will maintain sterility while opening a sterile package, sterile basin, sterile instrument tray, and a sterile wrapped item.

Age: Applicant must be 16 years of age or older.

Education: An applicant must be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED). College transcripts will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Advisor: A Program Advisor should be consulted prior to enrolling in any course. An advisor will be assigned by admissions.

ENGL 1010

Co-requisite(s): Entrance exam reading and writing scores in accordance with approved TCSG admission score levels or ENGL 0090. Emphasizes the development and improvement of written and oral communication abilities. Topics include analysis of writing, applied grammar and writing skills, editing and proofreading skills, research skills, and oral communication skills.

Co-requisite(s): Appropriate Placement Test Score or appropriate learning support exit point, or MATH 0090. Emphasizes the application of basic mathematical skills used in the solution of occupational and technical problems. Topics include fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and proportions, measurement and conversion, geometric concepts, technical applications, and basic statistics.

Pre-requisite(s): Appropriate Placement Test Score Emphasizes concepts and operations which are applied to the study of algebra. Topics include basic mathematical concepts, basic algebraic concepts, and intermediate algebraic concepts.

Pre-requisite(s): MATH 1013 Emphasizes basic geometric and trigonometric concepts. Topics include measurement conversion, geometric terminology and measurements, and trigonometric terminology and functions.

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission Focuses on basic normal structure and function of the human body. Topics include general plan and function of the human body, integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, nervous and sensory systems, endocrine system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, and reproductive system.

Pre-requisite(s): Provisional Admission Introduces a grouping of fundamental principles, practices, and issues common in the health care profession. In addition to the essential skills, students explore various delivery systems and related issues. Topics include: basic life support/CPR, basic emergency care/first aid and triage, vital signs, infection control/blood and air-borne pathogens.

Pre-requisite(s): Provisional Admission Introduces the elements of medical terminology. Emphasis is placed on building familiarity with medical words through knowledge of roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Topics include: origins (roots, prefixes, and suffixes), word building, abbreviations and symbols, and terminology related to the human anatomy.

CSSP 1010

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission This course provides an overview of the Central Sterile Processing and Distribution profession and develops the fundamental concepts and principles necessary to successfully participate as an entry level Central Sterile Processing Technician. Emphasis will be placed on the profession of Central Sterile Processing, basic sciences and related subjects, infection control, aseptic technique, equipment management, sterilization, instrumentation and supplies, legal issues, inventory management, safety, quality assurance, professional development and healthcare trends. Students completing this course will be eligible to apply to take the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) certification exam.

SURG 1010

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission Provides an overview of the surgical technology profession and develops the fundamental concepts and principles necessary to successfully participate on a surgical team. Topics include: orientation to surgical technology; biomedical principles; asepsis and the surgical environment; basic instrumentation and equipment; principles of the sterilization process; application of sterilization principles; and minimally invasive surgery. ((There are surgical procedures that are similar as far as procedural steps, instrumentation, supplies, patient position, etc. This is referred to as the ôCo-Related Procedures Concept.ö The purpose of using the Co-Related Procedures Concept is to provide the instructor additional time to teach surgical procedures as well as avoid repetition.))

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission Introduces the fundamentals of surgical microbiology. Topics include: historical development of microbiology; microscopes; cell structure and theory; microbial function and classification; human and pathogen relationships, infectious processes and terminology; defense mechanisms; infection control and principles of microbial control and destruction.
