The Hair Designer Technical Certificate of Credit is a sequence of courses that prepares students for careers in the field of hair design. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes specialized training in safety, sanitation, state laws, rules, and regulations, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, hair and scalp diseases and disorders, hair treatments and manipulations, hair shaping, hair styling, artificial hair, braiding/intertwining hair, chemical reformation and application,hair coloring, hair lightening, reception, sales, management, and work ethics. The curriculum meets state licensing requirements of the State Board of Cosmetolog

Length of Program: 3 Semesters

Education: An applicant must be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED). College transcripts will be evaluated on an individual basis.

COSM 1000

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission Introduces fundamental theory and practices of the cosmetology profession. Emphasis will be placed on professional practices and safety. Topics include: state rules and regulations; state regulatory agency; image; bacteriology; decontamination and infection control; chemistry fundamentals; safety; Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance; and anatomy and physiology.

COSM 1010

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Provides instruction in the chemistry and chemical reactions of permanent wave solutions and relaxers, application of permanent waves and relaxers. Precautions and special problems involved in applying permanent waves and relaxers will be emphasized. Topics include: permanent wave techniques, chemical relaxer techniques, chemistry, physical and chemical change, safety procedures, permanent wave and chemical relaxer application procedures, hair analysis, scalp analysis, permanent wave procedures (in an acceptable time frame), relaxer application (in an acceptable time frame), and Hazardous Duty Standards Act Compliance.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the theory, procedures and products used in the care and treatment of the scalp and hair, disease and disorders and their treatments and the fundamental theory and skills required to shampoo, condition, and recondition the hair and scalp.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the theory and skills necessary to apply haircutting techniques, advanced haircutting techniques, proper safety and decontamination precautions, hair design elements, cutting implements, head, hair and body analysis, and client consultation.

COSM 1040

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the fundamental theory and skills required to create shapings, pin curls, fingerwaves, roller placement, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, and comb-outs. Laboratory training includes styling training on manikin. Topics include: braiding/intertwining hair, styling principles, pin curls, roller placement, fingerwaves, skip waves, ridge curls, blow dry styling, thermal curling, thermal pressing, thermal waving, artificial hair and augmentation, comb-outs, and safety precautions.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Introduces the theory and application of temporary, semipermanent, demipermanent-deposit only, and permanent hair coloring, hair lightening, and color removal products and application. Topics include: principles of color theory, hair structure, color, tone, classifications of color, hair lightening, color removal, application procedures, safety precautions, client consultation, product knowledge, haircolor challenges, corrective solutions, and special effects.

Pre-requisite(s): COSM 1000, COSM 1010, COSM 1020, COSM 1030, COSM 1040, COSM 1060 Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1050, COSM 1070 Provides laboratory experiences necessary for the development of skill levels required to be a competent cosmetologist. The allocation of time to the various phases of cosmetology is required by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. This course includes a portion of the required hours for licensure. Topics include: scalp and hair treatments; haircutting; styling; dispensary; reception; safety precautions/decontamination; and Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1050, COSM 1070, COSM 1080 This course provides laboratory experiences necessary for the development of skill levels required to be a competent cosmetologist. The allocation of time to the various phases of cosmetology is prescribed by the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. This course includes a portion of the hours required for licensure. Topics include: permanent waving and relaxers; hair color, foiling, lightening, hair and scalp treatments; haircutting; clipper design, precision cutting, styling; dispensary; reception; safety precautions/decontamination; Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance; product knowledge, customer service skills, client retention, State Board Rules and Regulations guidelines, and State Board foundation prep.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1090 Provides experience necessary for professional development and completion of requirements for state licensure. Emphasis will be placed on the display of professional conduct and positive attitudes. The appropriate number of applications for completion of state board service credit requirements for this course may be met in a laboratory setting. Topics include: texture services; permanent waving and relaxers; hair color and lightening; hair and scalp treatment; haircutting; styling; dispensary; reception; safety precautions/ decontamination; and Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1100 Provides experience necessary for professional development and completion of requirements for state licensure. Emphasis will be placed on the display of professional conduct and positive attitudes. The requirements for this course may be met in a laboratory setting. Topics include: permanent waving and relaxers; hair color and lightening; hair and scalp treatments; haircutting; dispensary; styling; reception; safety precautions/decontamination; Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance; and state licensure preparation.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): COSM 1000 Emphasizes the steps involved in opening and operating a privately owned salon. Topics include: law requirements regarding employment, tax payer education / federal and state responsibilities, law requirements for owning and operating a salon business, business management practices, and public relations and career development.
