Cindy Lindsey, a proud Cook County resident and former Cosmetology student at our SRTC Tifton Campus, exemplifies excellence and dedication. As an outstanding student, she consistently worked ahead and completed her coursework half a semester early, graduating in December 2019. Impressively, she was already a licensed cosmetologist in the state of Georgia at the time of graduation.
Today, Cindy is the proud owner of Central Avenue Salon in Tifton, where she’s been in business for over 3.5 years. Even more inspiring? Out of the 8 stylists at her salon, 6 are former SRTC students.
1. What inspired you to pursue cosmetology?
I have always loved doing hair, makeup, nails, skin care, and just being around people who were in the industry. When I decided to make a career change I automatically knew that this was where I was destined to be.
2. Can you tell us about your experience as a student in cosmetology school?
As a student at SRTC I was encouraged, supported, and very well prepared for my new journey. My instructors were always there to answer any questions and help me to make the best decision on what was the best way to tackle any challenges that may arise.
3. What were the biggest challenges you faced when starting your own salon?
Accepting and overcoming the fear of being a salon owner.
4. What advice would you give to current cosmetology students? Never give up on your hopes and dreams. Anything can be accomplished with hard work and dedication. Always strive to be your best and give yourself credit for a job well done. We are our own worst critic even when everything is perfect.
5. What advice would you give to someone wanting to open a salon of their own?
Be prepared for your first couple of years to have up and downs. It will be worth all the hard work and stress that you may put on yourself. Don’t forget that you are awesome and have to be willing to give honest advice to your clients, as well as know that you will not always make everyone happy. Just do your best and make sure the clients feel beautiful and comfortable when they leave you. Find a mentor who has been through opening a salon and ask as many questions as you need to help you be fully prepared for the days ahead.
6. Looking back, is there anything you wish you had done differently?
I would have researched a lot more on how the best way to advertise, buy or finance my business and to saved more money before I went out totally on my own. I would also like to mention that out of 8 stylists at my salon 6 are former SRTC students.
