Flyer for American Sign Language CourseSouthern Regional Technical College’s Economic Development Division is pleased to announce an American Sign Language (ASL) Workshop that will be offered to Bainbridge-area residents this Spring. The 2-day workshop will be held on two Saturdays, April 13 and 20, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., at the SRTC-Midtown location.

Ms. Ronnie Mae Tyson of Valdosta will be leading the workshop, during which she will instruct participants on basic skills for communicating with hearing impaired people in the community. Tyson is excited to be a part of offering this opportunity to the Southwest Georgia Community. “This is my passion, so I do not feel like I will be working,” she said.

Tyson has been signing since her early teenage years and has extensive experience with teaching American Sign Language. Since 2010, she has been a Deaf Mentor with Georgia Pines. This mentoring program has allowed her to provide sign language guidance and instruction to families with a hearing impaired baby. Tyson has also taught ASL classes with the University of North Florida, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Fleming High School (Fleming Island, FL), and St. Johns River State College (St. Augustine, FL).

“I want to bridge the gap between the Deaf and Hearing Worlds,” said Tyson. “This gap is the communication barrier. It’s 2019. I want to see deaf people and hearing people conversing out in the community while engaging in daily activities.”

The ASL workshop is open for the community to participate. The cost of the 2-day workshop is $50.
