Southern Regional Technical College(SRTC) recently announced their top four Georgia Occupational Award for Leadership(GOAL) finalists. The GOAL competition begins annually during the Fall semester, when technical college instructors across Georgia identify their most promising students and nominate them for GOAL based on academic achievement and personal leadership. SRTC’s top four students met with a panel of judges in Moultrie in early December. In late January, SRTC’s GOAL student will be announced during a luncheon and awards ceremony. That student will go on to compete against the top students from Technical College System of Georgia(TCSG) schools across the state in the Spring.

All four of these students represent excellence in technical education. In the coming weeks, we would like to introduce the readers to these students, beginning with Mr. Mr. Ian Moody of Thomasville, Georgia.

Ian Moody graduated from Scholars Academy in Thomasville in 2016. After graduation, he started his college career at SRTC, saying, “I chose SRTC because it is the most convenient, practical way to further my education. I have to work to put myself through school, and this allows me to work and attend school at the same time.”

As Mr. Moody progresses in his college career, his family have been extremely supportive, encouraging him to persevere through the complexities of working, going to school, being involved in his community, and finding time for his family and friends. Moody will be the first member of his immediate family to attend college, and they are proud of his drive to better himself and strive for success.

Mr. Moody credits much of his current success to the lessons he learned while working towards the rank of Eagle Scout. “The skills and attributes that I learned as an Eagle Scout have helped me tremendously in my college setting, and also in the workplace. Throughout college, I have been able to balance out all my extracurricular activities, and been able to be prepared for any upcoming trials and challenges. I have been able to learn how all of my merit badges helped me prepare for life. It has helped me learn a tremendous amount of leadership, and having a long time commitment. Being an Eagle Scout in my daily life has helped me to be more goal-oriented, hardworking, and determined to better myself.”

Moody is majoring in General Business, a field that has always fascinated him, and hopes to continue on after graduation to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at Valdosta State University. After college, he hopes to pursue a career at Flowers Foods in his hometown of Thomasville, Georgia. Of his career, Mr. Moody said, “My career has helped me understand team work, perseverance, coordination, planning, community service, and public relations. I have become more social, and have been able to expand my relations with those in my community”

SRTC wishes all of the finalists good luck during this competition, and feel confident that they will each continue on to great career success and community leadership.
