Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) recently announced its top four Georgia Occupational Award for Leadership (GOAL) finalists. The GOAL competition begins annually during the Fall semester, when technical college instructors across Georgia identify their most promising students and nominate them for GOAL based on academic achievement and personal leadership. SRTC’s top four students met with a panel of judges in Moultrie in early December. In late January, SRTC’s GOAL student will be announced during a luncheon and awards ceremony. That student will go on to compete against the top students from Technical College System of Georgia(TCSG) schools across the state in the Spring.
All four of these students represent excellence in technical education. In the coming weeks, we would like to introduce the readers to these students, including Jennifer Perez, of Moultrie.
Before SRTC, Jennifer Perez was a student at Colquitt County High School. Even as a high school student, she planned to start her college career at Southern Regional Technical College. “I chose SRTC because it provided my major without having to travel out far. It let me stay close to my family, while also bringing me one step closer to my goal.” She is currently majoring in Drafting Technology, with a long-term goal to have a career in Architecture. She says that became inspired to pursue a career in architecture by her father, who works in construction. “He always had to look at the blueprints that architects made. I wanted to be that person to make those blueprints, making all the little pieces that will later come together into a bigger project.”
Perez feels that the faculty and staff have gone the extra mile for her during her time at SRTC, saying that they “have not only been there for me when I had class questions, but guided me with so much more than just school.”
After she graduates, she hopes to attend Kennesaw State University, continuing her college journey towards her calling in Architecture. There, she will be able to transfer many of her college credits, as SRTC offers twenty-seven general education courses that transfer to the University System of Georgia institutions across the state.
SRTC wishes all of the finalists good luck during this competition, and feel confident that they will each continue on to great career success and community leadership.
