Paralegal Student Faces Down Her Fears, Reinvents Herself.

Posted on

"With excitement building, I looked up Southern Regional Technical College website for the third time that day. There it was in the lists of programs offered, a program I thought would be perfect for me — the paralegal studies program. I was a bit apprehensive about applying and making contact. Chastising myself for being nervous, I picked up the phone and called the campus. The person on the other end seems as if she could sense my fear. Without hesitation, she invited me to stop by and talk to someone in admissions. The next day I did stop by, and I completed an application.

I was looking back on those two days and why I was so nervous. There were many reasons to cause my fear. Me getting accepted into Southern Regional Technical college was top on the list. Here I am in my thirties trying to reinvent myself. Needless to say during that time, my GPA was not impressive. With all those fear factors weighing in on me, I did get accepted into the paralegal program.

I was an unimpressive student allowed the chance to enter Southern Regional Technical College. I would have never known my potential, or my desire to continue my education.

Technical colleges have programs desired for different types of students, and careers. A student can obtain a certificate from an accredited certificate program in a shorter period. Technical colleges offer skills needed in this growing global economy. Even if you are a student entering the job market or continuing to higher education, the core values learned at a technical institution will shape you for success." -Tracie Washington

That essay is one of the reasons that Tracie was awarded the highly competitive Hill-Harrell Scholarship last week.

This scholarship was founded by Dr. Freida Hill-Harrell, former President at Southwest Georgia Technical College. While her career led her through various positions within the Technical College System of Georgia, South Georgia has always held a special place in her heart. Dr. Hill-Harrell and her husband, Mr. Bill Harrell, have decided to support the students at Southern Regional Technical College while they pursue their educational dreams. It is their mission to support students in need to ease the burdens of attending college.

SRTC's Foundation awards over 50 scholarships every semester. The next round of scholarships open in ten days, on May 27th.
