Each year the top participants from the Georgia Postsecondary SkillsUSA Chapter are afforded the opportunity to travel to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in their respective discipline among the nation’s most talented post-secondary students. The competition features competitors from technical colleges, junior colleges, state colleges, and research universities, all competing alongside each other. This year, Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) had one representative at the national level.

James Potts previously won a gold medal in Electrical Construction at the state competition which qualified him to compete in Louisville where he scored 929 points out of a possible 1000 to finish second nationally. The three day competition involved residential and commercial electrical construction against 28 other competitors. As a silver medalist, Potts brought home nearly $9,000 in tools. This is the second year a representative from the SRTC Electrical Systems program has competed in the national competition with last year’s participant placing fifth overall.

“We could not be more proud of Mr. Potts and his success in the SkillsUSA National Championships. The continued success of our students at this event is a testament to the knowledge we are able to provide via technical and career education. It further reinforces how vitally important our institution is and the services are that we provide, not only to our students and community, but to our state and national workforce,” said Dr. Craig Wentworth, SRTC President.

SkillsUSA is a national non-profit organization of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled work force.
