Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC), in partnership with Thomas County Emergency Services, is excited to announce the new Street to Station program. In fewer than 15 months, new recruits will gain the knowledge, experience, and credentials necessary to begin an exciting career as a Firefighter/AEMT with Thomas County Emergency Services. Upon completion of the program, the Firefighter/AEMTs will be equipped and prepared to engage in numerous duties related to Emergency Services, including fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials, and emergency medical operations with patient care. Recruits will have opportunities to advance into higher levels of medical training and will have great potential for career growth and upward mobility.
Recruits will begin with 8 to 10 weeks of in-house Firefighter 1 training before enrolling in the AEMT certificate program at SRTC for the spring semester, which begins January 9, 2024. The three-semester SRTC program includes two embedded Technical Certificates of Credit: Emergency Medical Technician and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. (To become SRTC students, recruits must be eligible to apply and cannot be on academic suspension from any college or university).
Thomas County Emergency Services has committed to pay all programmatic tuition and fees not covered by financial aid. In addition, recruits will be paid as full-time Thomas County employees from day one of the program. That means that they will be earning a competitive salary with eventual benefits after completion of training. In addition to the funds provided by Thomas County, SRTC, in collaboration with the US Department of Labor, will register recruits as apprentices, which provides up to $4,400 in apprenticeship funding. Recruits may access these funds for numerous reimbursable expenses related to their training and career.
All interested candidates should apply at the County Commissioner’s Office or online here. The deadline to apply is August 18, 2023. The program will begin with Firefighter 1 training on September 5.
