Thomas County Certified Literate Community Program Contributes to GED Scholarships

Posted on

On Monday, July 15th, the Thomas County Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP) made a $1000 donation to the Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) Foundation for GED Scholarships. GED Preparation and Adult Literacy classes are offered by SRTC free of charge to adults in the SRTC service delivery area, but GED testing is not free. Contributions from community partners like CLCP allow the SRTC Foundation to offer GED testing scholarships to many deserving students each year. SRTC President Jim Glass commented that community partnerships like CLCP are integral in serving the students of SRTC. “The generosity and support of organizations like Thomas County CLCP help us to further our mission of providing high-quality education to our students and workforce development of our region.”

CLCP also made a $1000 donation to Thomas County Family Connection collaborative, which serves as the local decision-making body, bringing community partners together to develop, implement, and evaluate plans that address the serious challenges facing Georgia’s children and families.

On the morning of Saturday, August 3rd, Thomas County Family Connection will present the 13th annual Back to School Blitz at the Thomas County High School Gym. The yearly event is an opportunity for kids and parents to learn about school health and safety, free and reduced lunch eligibility, bus routes, student and parent resources, and even pick up free school supplies. Kathy Megahee, Thomas County Family Connection Executive Director, said, “We want our kids to be healthy, ready to start school and do well when they get there. We want our families to be stable and self-sufficient, and we want them to live in strong communities. We appreciated the support of the CLCP, just as we support and applaud their mission to enhance literacy in Southwest Georgia.”

Throughout the year, CLCP provides free books to 4-year-olds through the Books Are Magical partnership with Thomasville Kiwanis, Thomasville Rotary, Flowers Foods, the United Way, and many individual local contributors. Joining forces with Walmart, CLCP provides free dictionaries to all third grade students in Thomas County. CLCP also hosts an annual Literacy Fair to promote reading in Thomas County.
