On Monday, August 5th, eight students were recognized at a Medical Assisting pinning ceremony held at Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC) - Tifton. These students completed one semester of prerequisite coursework as well as multiple semesters of rigorous occupational coursework, including a series of clinical rotations at local medical offices.
Flor Cordova-Rodriguez of Tifton, Bernadette Dixon of Tifton, Jessica Harmon of Tifton, Janesa Jones of Thomasville, Kimberly Norris of Camilla, Shaniqua Scott of Ashburn, Shelice Skeen of Tifton, and Tanara Soots of Tifton received pins and small gifts in honor of their accomplishments. Of these students, several were recognized with additional awards. Jessica Harmon received both the Medical Assisting Class of 2019 Highest GPA and Outstanding Clinical Student. Shellice Skeen was named Most Improved Medical Assisting Class of 2019. Shaniqua Scott earned Perfect Attendance designation. At the end of the ceremony, the students surprised their instructor, Gina Sierra, with a flower arrangement in appreciation of her leadership and dedication to their class.
The students are eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam. This designation represents a medical assistant who has been credentialed through the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
The Medical Assisting program at SRTC trains students for administrative and clinical duties, primarily in physicians’ offices or clinics. Clinical skills include taking vital signs, obtaining medical histories, performing basic lab tests, sterilizing instruments, administering medications, and assisting the physician. Administrative skills include answering phones, scheduling appointments, filing medical and insurance reports, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
Claudia Grooms, Associate Dean for the School of Health Sciences, commended and encouraged the graduating students, saying, “I want to thank our graduates for choosing Southern Regional Technical College. We are all honored to share in this celebration of your accomplishment. I know you worked hard and prepared well, and I wish you much continued success in your future.”
