Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, TCC (EMH1) (510904)  Technical Certificate of Credit

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certificate program prepares students to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system. Successful completion of the program allows the graduate to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians AEMT certification examination and apply for Georgia licensure as an AEMT. This technical certificate of credit replaces the EM01 "Emergency Medical Technician (Intermediate)" technical certificate of credit.

Length of Program: One (1) Semester

Entrance Date: Fall and Summer Semesters

Entrance Requirements: Refer to Admissions criteria. Click for Entrance Score Requirements.

Age: Applicant must be 17 years of age or older. Must be 18 at time of graduation and to sit for National Registry Exam.

Education: An applicant must be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED). Must hold current EMT License/Certification. College transcripts will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Additional Requirements: Physical Exam, Criminal Background Check, and Drug Toxicology.

Additional Information: Currently registered EMT’s wishing to return into the AEMT course must take the EMT comprehensive final exam. Returning students must score no less than 70%. Students scoring less than 70% will not be accepted into the AEMT course. Exams may be scheduled through the Program Chair.

Note: Those who have been arrested/convicted of a moral and/or legal violation of the law may not be granted permission to take the licensing examination.

Program Final Exit Point: Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, Technical Certificate of Credit. Eligible to apply for the National Registry AEMT Boards.

Credits Required for Graduation: 10 Minimum semester hour credits required.

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission This course serves as the introductory course to the advanced level practice of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). It expands on the information attained at the EMT level. Topics include: EMS Systems; Documentation; EMS System Communication; Therapeutic Communication; Principles of Pharmacology; Medication Administration; Emergency Medications; Airway Management; Respiration; Artificial Ventilation; Primary Assessment; and Secondary Assessment.

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission This course provides opportunities to apply fundamental knowledge of basic and selected advanced emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for the following: an acutely ill patient; a patient in shock, respiratory failure or arrest, cardiac failure or arrest, and post resuscitation management; and an acutely injured patient. In addition it provides a fundamental knowledge of growth, development, and aging and assessment findings to provide basic and selected advanced emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs. Topics include: Geriatrics; Patients with Special Challenges; Medical Overview; Neurology; Immunology; Infectious Disease; Endocrine Disorders; Cardiovascular; Toxicology; Respiratory; Hematology; Genitourinary/Renal; Shock and Resuscitation; Chest Trauma; Abdominal and Genitourinary Trauma; Orthopedic Trauma; Head, Facial, Neck, and Spine Trauma: Nervous System Trauma; and Integration of Medical/Trauma Assessments.
