Four students were recently recognized at a Medical Assisting pinning ceremony held at Southern Regional Technical College’s (SRTC) Moultrie location. These students completed one semester of prerequisite coursework as well as multiple semesters of rigorous occupational coursework, including a series of clinical rotations at local medical offices.

Patricia Key, Kaylyn Huite, Lauren Smith, and Catyona Chapman were all recognized for completing the requirements of the Medical Assisting program.

“I am incredibly proud of the accomplishments of this group of graduates and know they will represent our College and community as leaders in their field as they progress in their careers. To borrow two lines from the American Association of Medical Assistants Creed to describe these ladies. First, ‘I aspire to render greater service’ and second, ‘I am strengthened by compassion, courage, and faith.’ They have volunteered on numerous occasions to be involved in improving the school and communities they represent. I have seen these individuals grown and become stronger in their compassion for others, their courage to raise the bar, and their faith to believe in the profession and in themselves. I wish them the best as they move forward in their journey,” stated Medical Assisting Instructor Jill Burnette.

The Medical Assisting program at SRTC trains students for administrative and clinical duties, primarily in physicians’ offices or clinics. Clinical skills include taking vital signs, obtaining medical histories, performing basic lab tests, sterilizing instruments, administering medications, and assisting the physician. Administrative skills include answering phones, scheduling appointments, filing medical and insurance reports, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services. The College offers both degree and diploma educational tracks. The Medical Assisting diploma program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
