SRTC Procedure: Student Organization (SO) and Student Interest Group (SIG) Recognition and Funding
Student organizations play a vital role in enhancing campus life by fostering leadership, collaboration, and personal growth among students. All students seeking to create a new organization must follow the steps outlined in this procedure to receive official recognition, access to campus resources, and eligibility for funding and event support. This process is designed to promote accountability and sustainability within all student-led groups. The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all groups are established in a fair, transparent, and consistent manner, and that they align with the college’s mission, values, and community standards.
Student Organizations (SOs) must be open to all students, including online students.
- All SOs must either:
- Be academically affiliated, or
- Align with the Mission of Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC).
- SOs are subject to the authority and regulations of the college.
- SOs must comply with all policies outlined in the Student Handbook (available online or by request).
Student Interest Groups (SIGs) are clubs or groups focused on a specific population.
- All SIGs must either:
- Align with a particular program of study,
- Align with a particular career field,
- Be academically affiliated, or
- Align with the Mission of Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC).
- SIGs are subject to the authority and regulations of the college.
- SIGs must comply with all policies outlined in the Student Handbook (available online or by request)
- Application to Form a New Student Organization or Student Interest Group
To start a new SO or SIG:
1. Submit request to Student Life Director or Campus Director for Application.
2. Complete the New Student Organization or Interest Group Application.
3. Submit the application to the Student Life Director or Campus Director.
4. The application will be reviewed by the Student Life Director or Campus Director and the Vice President for Student Affairs.
5. These officials will determine the organization's eligibility before it is presented to the Student Government Association (SGA) and the college President for approval.
6. If approved, Governance Establishment and Organizational Structure Document provided to the applicant must be completed and submitted to the Student Life Director or Campus Director
2. Approval and Funding Guidelines
- New SOs and SIGs are not eligible for funding during their first calendar year to ensure sustained student interest.
- All SOs and SIGs may request funding from SRTC SGA; however, approval is not guaranteed.
- Funding Depends on the following:
- Availability of funds
- The purpose of the request
- Compliance with budget request guidelines
- Final approval from the Vice President for Student Affairs
3. Continued Recognition
- To maintain recognition, the SIG must meet all of the following:
- Clearly align with SRTC’s educational goals and mission
- Demonstrate continued student interest and active participation
- Operate within the rules and policies of the college and Student Handbook
- Complete the Governance Establishment and Organizational Structure Document annually
Responsibility:
The Vice President for Student Affairs has the overall responsibility for ensuring this procedure is implemented.
