The Welding and Joining Technology diploma is designed to prepare students for careers in the welding industry. Program learning opportunities develop academic, technical, professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program emphasizes welding theory and practical application necessary for successful employment. Program graduates receive a Welding and Joining Technology diploma, have the qualifications of a welding and joining technician, and are prepared to take qualification tests.

Length of Program: Three (3) Semesters

Entrance Dates: Beginning of each semester.

Age: Applicant must be 16 years of age or older.

Education: An applicant must be a high school graduate or the equivalent (GED). College transcripts will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Program Final Exit Point: Welding and Joining Technology, Diploma.

Pre-requisite(s): Program Admission Emphasizes human relations and professional development in today's rapidly changing world that prepares students for living and working in a complex society. Topics include human relations skills, job acquisition skills and communication, job retention skills, job advancement skills, and professional image skills, personal finance, problem solving, and diversity.

PSYC 1010

Pre-requisite(s): Entrance exam reading and writing scores in accordance with approved TCSG admission score levels Presents basic concepts within the field of psychology and their application to everyday human behavior, thinking, and emotion. Emphasis is placed on students understanding basic psychological principles and their application within the context of family, work and social interactions. Topics include an overview of psychology as a science, the nervous and sensory systems, learning and memory, motivation and emotion, intelligence, lifespan development, personality, psychological disorders and their treatments, stress and health, and social psychology.

Emphasizes the application of basic mathematical skills used in the solution of occupational and technical problems. Topics include fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and proportions, measurement and conversion, geometric concepts, technical applications, and basic statistics.

Emphasizes concepts and operations which are applied to the study of algebra. Topics include basic mathematical concepts, basic algebraic concepts, and intermediate algebraic concepts.

Pre-requisite(s): MATH 1013 Emphasizes basic geometric and trigonometric concepts. Topics include measurement conversion, geometric terminology and measurements, and trigonometric terminology and functions.

COLL 1500

This course is designed to provide tools to assist students to acquire skills necessary to achieve academic and professional success in their chosen occupational/ technical program of study. Topics include: Getting off to a Good Start, Learning and Personality Styles, Time and Money Management, Study and Test Taking Skills, Stress Management and Wellness, Communications Skills, Career Exploration, Research Skills, College Campus Knowledge, Memory & Reading Skills, Presentation & Interview Skills, and Group Skills. Effective Fall 2016, students who already have an Associate Degree or higher will be given exemption credit for the COLL 1500 course.

Pre-requisite(s): Provisional Admission Provides an introduction to welding technology with an emphasis on basic welding laboratory principles and operating procedures. Topics include: industrial safety and health practices, hand tool and power machine use, measurement, laboratory operating procedures, welding power sources, welding career potentials, and introduction to welding codes and standards.

WELD 1010

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1000 Introduces fundamental principles, safety practices, equipment, and techniques necessary for metal heating and oxyfuel plasma cutting. Topics include: metal heating and cutting principles, safety procedures, use of cutting torches and apparatus, metal heating techniques, metal cutting techniques, manual and automatic oxyfuel cutting techniques, and oxyfuel pipe cutting. Practice in the laboratory is provided.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1000 This course introduces the knowledge and skills necessary for reading welding and related blueprints and sketches. An emphasis is placed on identifying types of welds, and the associated abbreviations and symbols.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1000 This course introduces the major theory, safety practices, and techniques required for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in flat positions. Qualification tests, flat position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial welds.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1000 Introduces the major theory, safety practices, and techniques required for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in the horizontal position. Qualification tests, horizontal position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include: horizontal SMAW safety and health practices, selection and applications of electrodes, selection and applications for horizontal SMAW, horizontal SMAW joints, and horizontal SMAW to specification.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1000 Introduces the major theory, safety practices, and techniques required for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in the vertical position. Qualification tests, vertical position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include: vertical SMAW safety and health practices, selection and applications of electrodes for vertical SMAW, vertical SMAW joints, and vertical SMAW to specification.

Qualification tests, overhead position, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include: overhead SMAW safety and health practices, selection and applications of electrodes for overhead SMAW, overhead SMAW joints, and overhead SMAW to specification.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1000 Provides knowledge of theory, safety practices, equipment and techniques required for successful gas metal arc welding. Qualification tests, all positions, are used in the evaluation of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include: GMAW safety and health practices; GMAW theory, machines, and set up; transfer modes; wire selection; shielded gas selection; and GMAW joints in all positions.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1000 Provides knowledge of theory, safety practices, inert gas, equipment, and techniques required for successful gas tungsten arc welding. Qualification tests, all positions, are used in the evaluating of student progress toward making industrial standard welds. Topics include: GTAW safety and health practices; shielding gases; metal cleaning procedures; GTAW machines and set up; selection of filler rods; GTAW weld positions; and production of GTAW beads, bead patterns, and joints.

Pre/Co-requisite(s): WELD 1040, WELD 1070, WELD 1090, WELD 1110 Introduces industrial qualification methods, procedures, and requirements. Students are prepared to meet the qualification criteria of selected national welding codes and standards.
